Last Summer, August 2023, I received a phonecall from my hypnotherapy colleague and friend, John Scanlon, inviting me to speak at this year's Irish Hypnotherapy Conference. I met John last year at the very first Conference in Wicklow. I had heard about the event on Facebook, and quickly signed up and invited all past students and fellow hypnotherapists to go along too. It was such a fantastic weekend, and many of us have since all met up numerous times around the country, and some great new friendships have been made.

Fast forward to April 2024, and the second conference is now just days away. I am putting the finishing touches to my talk, titled
Transformative Wellness: A Blueprint For Weight Loss And Lifelong Success. I will be sharing some useful information for hypnotherapists, to use with their clients who wish to break free from emotional eating and self sabotage; techniques that I have found work extremely well in my own practice with my own clients.

Speakers are coming from around the world to share their knowledge and I am so looking forward to learning, networking and making even more connections. It is amazing to have a such a group of supportive people.

The event kicks off this Friday evening, for those who are there, followed by two days of 18 speakers in 2 rooms at the venue. There will be dinner on Saturday evening with entertainment not to be missed! There are a few different ticket options if you would like to join us (there's still time)!
Click your preferred option:
Sunday €130
Saturday €130
Weekend Ticket €250
Weekend Including dinner €300

If you're a hypnotherapist, or you want to be, or you're just interested in a fun weekend away, please feel free to book and join us at the Clayton Hotel, Dublin. Accommodation can be booked directly through the hotel.

Other speakers include: Adam Cox, Freddy Jacquin, Rob de Groof, Dr Kate Beaven Marks, Sue Nichols, Karl Smith, Carina McEvoy, Fiachra Morrison, Gary Coles, Grant Murrell, Jason O'Callaghan, Kaz Riley, Sarah-Jane O'Neill, Sean Michael Andrews, Sheila Granger, Stephen McGill, and Stephen Travers.

Wish me luck, and hope to see some of you there!

<![CDATA[Let Go of Limiting Beliefs]]>Mon, 10 Apr 2023 14:50:29 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/let-go-of-limiting-beliefs'Aerodynamically, the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that, so it goes on flying anyway.' Mary Kay Ash

Were you ever told that you wouldn't do well at something? Did you internalise that, resulting in it becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy?

What if you were never told that? What if you never thought that? What if you were told the opposite? What if you believed the opposite?

For example, imagine a child being labelled (by themself or another) as 'not very sporty'. That child would be unlikely to volunteer to play football or take up running, because it's in their head that they're not very sporty. They might happily go on with this for their whole life, having never stopped to find out if it was actually true.

What do you say about yourself? What are you good at, what are you not good at?

Is the latter actually true, or is it something that was just said as a passing comment to you, a long time ago? Do you see the power of mental limitations we have (put) upon ourselves?

The bumblebee just gets on with what it wants to do, without thinking of the fact that it shouldn't actually be able to do it...

If you need help breaking free from limiting beliefs, get in touch as I have just the techniques for you...! Imagine how you could be?

<![CDATA[What are your 'non-negotiables'?]]>Sun, 08 Jan 2023 12:27:40 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/what-are-your-non-negotiables
What are your 'non-negotiables'?

What do you do, every day, without question? What do you automatically fit into your day, regardless of what else is going on?

What would you like to become a 'non-negotiable' in your life?

You wouldn't think of not brushing your teeth every day, twice a day (or more). It's become a habit since childhood - something you do often without even thinking.

You shower every day, again without question. It's something you do automatically.
If you missed even a day of either of these things, you'd definitely notice...!

What would you LOVE to add into your daily routine? Exercise? Meditation? Journalling? Where can you fit this in? If daily isn't possible, every second day?

Here are some of my non-negotiables:
 • Protein smoothie packed full of goodness each morning
 • 1 hour of exercise at least 5 times a week
 • Yoga at least twice a week
 • Skincare routine each evening
 • Once or twice weekly sauna
 • 2L water a day

If I miss any of these things, I can feel a difference.

I would love to add journalling and meditation to my daily routine, so that's what I will be working on. What about you?

I helped many women create space to add exercise as a non-negotiable or themselves last year. If you'd like to do the same, get in touch and we can get started! laura@edenwellness.ie www.edenwellness.ie

<![CDATA[Noisy or Chaotic Surroundings? Go Within for Calm]]>Thu, 22 Dec 2022 13:30:10 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/noisy-or-chaotic-surroundings-go-within-for-calm

My office is on a fairly busy road. It can be quite noisy outside and there are often people walking past, chatting to each other or on the phone. When I was thinking of taking on the space, a few people asked me, 'would the busy-ness not bother you? Don't you need a quieter, calmer environment?'

While it is lovely to have peace and quiet, the foundation of my work lies in this: we cannot control what goes on around us, whether that's at home or at work. But we can learn to control what goes on within. You can be in the midst of chaos and bring ourselves to a sense of calm. Maybe you work in retail, a place full of customers, or in a hospital, with no control over how much pressure you're going to be under. You might live in a house of constantly fighting teenagers. Whatever your situation, you can learn to control how YOU choose to feel.

Hypnosis/hypnotherapy is not relaxation. You don't need quiet for it to work. It is true that relaxation can be a lovely side effect - but it is not part of the hypnotherapy itself. The side effect is created by you, in your imagination, and so many clients say they heard the traffic outside but then it faded into the background. They forgot about it. They went within.

The same is said in my weekly meditation group. They've learned to notice the contrast between the busy-ness outside the front door, and the calmness within the room. It can even enhance their meditation.

I grew up in London - there was constant noise. We'd hear and be in the midst of traffic, all day and night, people rushing about, trains, buses, planes overhead. But we don't know any different. We didn't even flinch when police cars sped past numerous times a day. Many of my hypnotherapy colleagues work in far, far noisier offices than mine. But, how I noticed the difference when I moved over here. It actually took a lot to get used to it, as lovely as it is.

Yes - going to a quiet place - be it a retreat, or a beach holiday, or anything like that is wonderful. But you don't have to wait for an opportunity like that to come along in order to clear your head.

When you can control your inner world no matter what is going on around you, you have a real power there. After all, we've found that out more than ever in the last few years.

Take your mind to a place of focus, go within, and notice how your outer reality can change as result....

<![CDATA['I'm Fine!' What lies beneath...]]>Mon, 19 Sep 2022 10:31:13 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/im-fine-what-lies-beneath
September 2012

A few weeks after this was taken, I was prescribed anti depressants (not for the first time) and referred for 6 months of counselling. My baby boy was 5 months old.

Having battled with my mind in the past, I felt I didn’t need help, especially as it is part of my job to help people with their minds. I thought I would be failing if I couldn’t sort things out myself. I thought it would look bad if I ever told anyone.

I had a number of traumatic life events during my pregnancy, including losing my Mum to cancer, and all the grief that I’d tried to protect my baby from finally came out after he was born - not to mention the usual cocktail of emotions we have after having a baby. There’s a story about his birth too, but that’s for another post..!

I eventually got help, not because I asked for it, but because my husband contacted the health nurse. He told me she would be visiting to check on the baby – but she was actually visiting to check on me.

I agreed to go to my GP because anything was better than the numbness I was feeling. I took the medication and went for the help, which helped me bring myself out of the hole I’d fallen into, and I could start to see clearly again. It was like a fog was lifting.

Why am I sharing this?

I want you to know I’m not just sitting opposite you dishing out advice or reeling off the same stuff I do to everyone. I know what it’s like to feel that despair, that helplessness, and that exhaustion when you feel there’s nothing you can do but keep going. We all feel it in different ways, and this was just one of my experiences.

I am also sharing it as a reminder that people in a difficult place can still smile and look happy, even feel moments of happiness, but feel like they’re drowning at the same time.

Just because I use what are considered to be ‘alternative’ methods in my work (they’re actually complementary, to work alongside or on their own), it doesn’t mean I discourage anything else. Whatever it takes to help you to feel better, do it. I did… and I would again.

You know where I am if you want to ask anything at all. x

<![CDATA[What's one of the differences between an ex-smoker and a non-smoker?]]>Thu, 25 Aug 2022 11:57:24 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/whats-one-of-the-differences-between-an-ex-smoker-and-a-non-smoker

HYPNOSIS IN MINUTES: Read on if you want to be a non-smoker!
What’s the difference Between an ex-smoker and someone who never smoked, and how does it affect success?
It’s in the language that you use!
Think about this:
When a non-smoker is offered a cigarette, they say words to the effect of, ‘no thanks, I don’t smoke.’
When they’re asked ‘do you have a cigarette?’ they say ‘no, I don’t smoke.’
When they’re asked ‘do you smoke?’ they reply with ‘no’.
When someone who has quit is asked the same questions, they say ‘no thanks, I’ve quit!’ or ‘I’m trying to quit’, or ‘I’ve cut back, ‘I gave up’, or ‘I’m off them’ etc.
What do you notice about the ex-smoker’s responses?

They are all implications that they smoke. Little reminders creeping into the mind.
Their responses are a continued and repeated suggestion they smoke.
The words are implying that this could be a struggle, is a challenge to maintain, or that they’re trying every day to remain a non-smoker.
If you have stopped or are hoping to, start by changing your language. Speak like a non-smoker. Answer those questions like a non-smoker. See how much easier it makes things.

Start right now and repeat in your mind the words ‘I am a non-smoker and will remain so for the rest of my life.’

If anyone offers you a cigarette, reply with ‘no thanks, I don’t smoke.’

Each and every time you say these words, you reinforce the fact that you don’t smoke, and you’ll feel an empowering sense of pride and satisfaction.

Let me know how you get on!

<![CDATA[C H I L D H O O D]]>Fri, 06 May 2022 09:44:09 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/c-h-i-l-d-h-o-o-dC H I L D H O O D

The foundations of who you are.

Your childhood determines how you see the world, how you see yourself, how you deal with things, how you think about things, what your values are, how you work, how you live, how you love, how you parent, everything.

A troubled childhood doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a troubled life. But you might. Just as a happy childhood doesn't necessarily mean you'll be successful, but you might. The 'nature vs nurture' debate has long been discussed the world over. The difference here is your resilience, your determination, your belief in yourself, your knowledge from the world and education, and so many other factors. But ultimately, how you deal with things in life come from childhood.

One child might take a criticism and turn it inward, and it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Another child might take that same criticism and find a fire within, a determination to prove the world wrong - and they do.

Events don't have to have been deliberate acts intended to upset; often, people don't realise what damage a simple passing comment can cause.

How does your childhood affect you, good and bad? What if you could use your mind/brain to change things you'd like to change, to stop damaging stories, beliefs, and scars from causing any more harm? What would you be like now, who would you be, if things had been different?

There is always a way to heal. You can't change the past - but you can step into your future - it's in your hands. I can and have helped hundreds of people move forward from upsetting memories, so they can create a life they are secure in. Get in touch if this is something you feel you could benefit from.

<![CDATA[You Can Change The Way You Feel, If You Want To]]>Sun, 10 Apr 2022 18:16:40 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/you-can-change-the-way-you-feel-if-you-want-to
Microblog!
If you have a fear of dogs, you can choose to feel the way you feel about fluffy rabbits instead. If you smoke, you can choose to live your life as a non-smoker, forever. If you dread going to work every morning, you can change that feeling to feel the way when you do the weekly shop, for example (not hugely excited, but ok all the same). If you feel overwhelmed, you can train your mind to become focused, tidy and organised. If you struggle in any area of life, it doesn't have to be that way. So often, we think 'it's just the way I am' and surrender to our feelings, responses, characteristics. But if they cause you distress, they can and should be changed! It is far easier than you might think. Get in touch to find out how I could help you.

<![CDATA[How Do You Self-Soothe?]]>Tue, 22 Mar 2022 14:19:43 GMThttps://www.edenwellness.ie/blog/how-do-you-self-soothe
'The main affliction of our modern civilisation is that we don't know how to handle the suffering inside us and we try to cover it up with all kinds of consumption.'
Thich Nhat Hanh

Think about it - we are all about instant gratification these days, especially as we are coming out of restrictions and lockdowns. We don't have to be bored - ever - we can watch whatever we want, whenever we want. Our children are handed iPads wherever they are, whenever. Restaurants, family gatherings, you see it everywhere. We are constantly being distracted by our outside world. What's the problem? The problem is, we still have problems. We still have stresses, but we are losing the ability to deal with them. We still have things to do, jobs to go to, and responsibilities to honour. So what happens when all this gets too much?

We eat. We drink. We smoke. We act up. Insert any other behaviour here. We do anything we can to self-soothe, to distract, to escape what is actually going on, because we don't know what to do with those feelings. We've spent years being distracted, busy, on the go, but the stresses still build up and we ignore.

When clients talk to me, they might start crying and say ‘I have no idea where this is coming from,’ and they apologise. I think it’s good. It’s a breakthrough. I hand them a tissue and tell them it’s ok, and to keep going, keep talking, keep crying, sit with the feelings. They always feel better for it, even if it’s a realisation and acknowledgement of just how much is going on for them. Because from there, we can do something. We can change the coping mechanisms. We can replace the unhelpful behaviours. We can heal.

If you dislike the idea of sitting still, you need to sit still. Read that again…

Contact me if this sounds familiar - and I may be able to help you.
